Buffalo Grove Orthodontist Recommends Braces For Adults

BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS – Many adults are insecure about braces and often try to avoid orthodontic treatment, but country singer Faith Hill recently showed that there’s no reason to be embarrassed.

Adult BracesHill wore clear braces along with a black dress at the Country Music Association Awards in November. The country singer revealed she had to get braces because she didn’t wear her retainer regularly after completing orthodontic treatment as a teenager, and she is now a good role model for two of her daughters who have braces.

Hill isn’t the first celebrity to show her braces out in public. Tom Cruise wore braces at the age of 39, and Katherine Heigl wore Invisalign retainers at 28.

Since braces are associated with teens, adults often reject the idea of metal braces. But what they may not know is that straight teeth don’t just look better, they can actually improve overall oral health.

Braces are used to treat bad bites. Even if the teeth are straight, the upper or lower jaws may not be aligned properly. Orthodontic treatment can correct the bite and prevent future problems including tooth decay and jaw problems.

“It’s never too late for orthodontic treatment,” said Dr. Yan Razdolsky, a Buffalo Grove orthodontist. “Some people may have orthodontic problems that were not treated during their childhood, while others may need further treatment. It’s refreshing to see a high-profile celebrity such as Faith Hill sporting braces, because perhaps this helps eliminate the stigma many adults associate with adult orthodontic treatment.”

Adults need to know that there are many options for more comfortable braces that aren’t as noticeable as they used to be, Dr. Razdolsky added.

Today, patients can choose from a variety of braces that provide different levels of comfort and visibility. Traditional metal braces are the most common type, and they are now more comfortable than ever. Lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth. Ceramic braces are made of clear materials, but require extra care. Another option is Invisalign, which are clear aligners that can be removed to eat and practice oral hygiene.

If you’re an adult seeking orthodontic treatment, don’t let your self-consciousness about braces prevent you from getting a beautiful smile. Dr. Razdolsky has treated a considerable number of adults along with kids for braces. Contact our clinic today for more information or to schedule an appointment.
